Miami Open Update

As the Volvo Car Stadium prepares for the April 1st kickoff on Daniel Island, five contenders in our player field are also quarterfinalists in the Miami Open, and will join us in Charleston in less than a week.

Johanna Konta put together a two-set victory over Spaniard Lara Arruabarrena after fighting tooth and nail during the first set but breezing through the second with a 7-5, 6-1 victory. This is Konta’s second appearance in the quarterfinals of the Miami Open. Both Konta and Arruabarrena will be Volvo Car Open contenders this year in Charleston.

Konta will move onto face Romanian Simona Halep who defeated Volvo Car Open fan favorite Sam Stosur in three long sets, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.

Mirjana Lucic-Baroni defeated American doubles stand-out Bethanie Mattek-Sands, though by no easy means. The 7-5, 6-4 match was neck and neck before Lucic-Baroni squeaked out the win against the Volvo Car Open main draw wild card recipient.  Lucic-Baroni then went head to head with Karolina Pliskova in the quarterfinals, falling 6-3, 6-4 to the Czech second-seed.

Mattek-Sands' longtime doubles partner, Lucie Safarova, defeated Dominika Cibulkova after a close first set that went into a tiebreak before Safarova cruised through the second to a 7-6, 6-1 victory.

Caroline Wozniacki walked away with a win after Garbine Muguruza retired during a tight first-set tiebreak. Former Volvo Car Open champion Wozniacki will face left-handed Safarova in the quarterfinals.

Venus Williams powered through a close match with Svetlana Kuznetsova, taking a 6-3, 7-6 win into her match with another former Volvo Car Open champion, Angelique Kerber.

We will see five of these quarterfinalist in just a few days here in Charleston, and wish them the best of luck.
