Cup Choices: Monday, March 31
What’s the best cure for the Monday blues? How about some world-class tennis in Charleston?
Fans will get just that as the 42nd installment of the Volvo Car Open gets underway today with a schedule brimming with high-quality main draw matches. Play starts at 10 am and will go throughout the day on four courts.
Plan Your Day
No. 15 seed Madison Keys (pictured) takes to Stadium Court second to face veteran Mirjana Lucic-Baroni, a Wimbledon semifinalist in 1999. Keys was a quarterfinalist here a year ago in her first stop at the Volvo Car Open Tennis Center and has continued her climb up the rankings, where she is now No. 38.
2013 Charleston surprise semifinalist Stefanie Voegele returns to the Cup after making a big run a year ago. She takes on hard-hitting Ajla Tomljanovic of Croatia in the third match on Court 3. Voegele won their lone meeting last summer in Stanford.
No. 10 seed Maria Kirilenko makes her debut in 2014 after sitting out for months with an injury. The Russian baseliner meets Belinda Bencic in round one, a 17-year-old with plenty of promise. They play third on Stadium Court.
Two more Americans are playing can’t-miss matches Monday: Melanie Oudin against Jana Cepelova (fourth on Stadium) and Christina McHale takes on qualifier Alla Kudryavtseva (fourth on Althea Gibson). Oudin made the quarterfinals here in 2010 and McHale reached the same round in 2011.
