Former Champs Jankovic and Stosur Do Battle on Blockbuster Day
One day, 20 matches.
Tuesday at the Volvo Car Open is one of the most jam-packed schedules you’ll find in all of tennis, from Volvo Car Stadium to Althea Gibson Club Court and beyond.
It’s headlined by former champions Jelena Jankovic (2007) and Sam Stosur (2010) doing battle in the evening session, but also includes local favorite Shelby Rogers, Americans Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lauren Davis, former finalist Lucie Safarova all in action and a slate of must-see doubles action featuring some of the world’s best teams.
And who said Tuesdays were a drag?
Here, we highlight five matches you can’t miss on a day full of to-be-seen tennis:
Jennifer Brady (USA) vs. Mona Barthel (GER)
First match – 10am, Althea Gibson Club Court
If you don’t know Brady’s name you should learn it fast. The 21-year-old American made a surprise run to the fourth round of the Australian Open in January, and has now embedded herself in the top 100. She and Barthel will meet for the first time.
Shelby Rogers (USA) vs. [Q] Veronica Cepede Royg (PAR)
Second match – not before noon, Volvo Car Stadium
This is a resumption from the last match on Stadium from Monday when the rain came. It was then that the Paraguayan led 3-1 in the first set, so if Rogers would like to meet top seed Madison Keys in round two, she’ll have to mount a home-court comeback to do so.
[WC] Bethanie Mattek-Sands (USA) vs. [Q] Sofia Kenin (USA)
Third match, Volvo Car Stadium
It’s an all-American battle between the veteran Mattek-Sands and Kenin, who is just 18 years old. Mattek-Sands had a resurgent run in Miami last week, making the fourth round, and she’s the current world No. 1 in doubles alongside partner Safarova.
Jennifer Brady/Alison Riske (USA) vs. Lauren Davis/Shelby Rogers (USA)
Third match, Court 4
Who doesn’t love doubles in Charleston? It’s been a fan favorite for years at this event and this match-up on Tuesday promises to be a thriller, with four Americans – and all familiar names to tennis fans – to do battle for a spot in the second round.
Samantha Stosur (AUS) vs. Jelena Jankovic (SRB)
Evening session – 7pm, Volvo Car Stadium
It’s the 10th time these two 30-somethings have met, with Jankovic leading their head to head 7-2, including a win at the 2013 French Open, their most recent clash. It’ll be a back-and-forth between Jankovic’s consistency and the high-octane power of Stosur’s serve-and-forehand one-two punch.
