Hingis Chasing Doubles Crown, Partner No. 1 Ranking
Martina Hingis can win a fourth Volvo Car Open title on Sunday – 16 years after her last.
The former world No. 1 in singles and doubles has returned to Daniel Island for the first time since 2001 this year, playing doubles alongside Sania Mirza. The duo, seeded first, won in a rain-delayed match on Saturday afternoon to make her third consecutive WTA final in three tournaments as partners.

Hingis and Mirza defeated Russia’s Alla Kudryatseva and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-4, 1-6, 10-7 to make the doubles final, where they’ll face Casey Dellacqua and Darija Jurak, the duo beating Marina Erakovic and Andrea Petkovic 6-4, 1-6, 10-5.
Hingis and Mirza are playing for more than just the Volvo Car Open title: Should they win on Sunday Mirza will become the world No. 1 in doubles for the first time in her career.
“Our best quality as a pair is that no matter how well we’re playing, we always give our best,” said Mirza, who is a superstar in India. “At some point we might lose a match, but that won’t change the fact that we believe in our abilities.”
Hingis/Mirza are 13-0 in their three tournaments together. One more win will give Mirza the No. 1 ranking, and give the team the lead in the Road to Singapore for the WTA Finals.
