Tennis Channel Changes the Game for Volvo Car Open
This year, Tennis Channel is giving more people than ever the opportunity to watch the 2017 Volvo Car Open. Thanks to the network’s week-long telecasts, fans across the country have access to more on-air and digital coverage than has been available at any time during the tournament’s 44-year history. With day-long matches from the first Monday to championship Sunday, Tennis Channel will air more than 50 hours of live Volvo Car Open action.
Modeled after the enormous success of Tennis Channel’s comprehensive Citi Open coverage in Washington, D.C., – where attendance, TV viewership and advertising all increased during the first year of the partnership – the Volvo Car Open now receives the same thorough treatment from the network. This means going beyond the court to highlight the deep tradition of tennis in Charleston, as well as the rich culture of the city itself. In addition to expanded hours, Tennis Channel has an on-site desk that serves as the central television hub for the week and Hall of Fame analysis from Lindsay Davenport and Tracy Austin, along with legendary coach Paul Annacone beside decorated broadcasters Mary Carillo, Ted Robinson and Steve Weissman.
Tennis Channel’s digital subscription service, Tennis Channel Plus, is also carrying more than 100 hours of additional matches during the tournament. The offering is available to everyone, regardless of whether they have a subscription to the television network, and offers exclusive content that doesn’t appear on the linear channel.
“South Carolina is one of tennis’ most passionate hotbeds, and I always enjoyed playing there,” said Austin, who won the tournament in 1979 and 1980. “It’s great news that Tennis Channel is going to show people around the country what makes this event so special every spring.”
Tennis Channel is the leader in televised tennis, airing nearly 70 percent of all the tennis seen in the United States – more than all other networks combined. In the more than four decade span of the Volvo Car Open, 10 of the 23 different singles champions have gone on to the Hall of Fame. This spring, fans across the country are watching Tennis Channel to see the next winner write her name in the history books.
