Wozniacki Makes Charleston Return as Rogers Looks to Continue Run
Caroline Wozniacki has waited four years to return to the Volvo Car Open.
Wednesday evening – as lightning and rain set in – she was forced to wait one more night.
Wozniacki was set to play her second round match against Annika Beck in Wednesday’s evening session but was forced to leave Volvo Car Stadium after the warm-up as the storm set in, and will play second match up on what is a loaded day of action on Thursday in Charleston.
Wozniacki’s match is the lone second-round encounter to be finished, as the rest of the action is third round, with eight coveted spots in the quarterfinals to be claimed.
Here, we look at five matches you can’t miss around the grounds today:
Sam Stosur (AUS) vs. Irina-Camelia Begu (ROU)
First match – 11 am, Volvo Car Stadium
It’s the first meeting between Stosur – the 2010 champion here – and Begu, who has been to the quarterfinals in both of her two previous appearances on Daniel Island. Stosur was in sizzling form on Tuesday in a straight-set win over another former champ, Jelena Jankovic, dropping just four games in total.
Caroline Wozniacki (DEN) vs. Annika Beck (GER)
Second match – Not before 12:30pm, Volvo Car Stadium
Wozniacki is 2-0 against Beck, a baseliner who has a consistent, dangerous game. But the former world No. 1 arrives in fine form from Miami, where she was a finalist for the third time this 2017 season.
Lucie Safarova (CZE) vs. Laura Siegemund (GER)
Fourth match, Volvo Car Stadium
A finalist here in 2012, Safarova is rounding back into form having battled illness and injury in the last 18 months. The former world No. 5 plays Siegemund, who saved two match points against the legendary Venus Williams on Tuesday in an upset victory.
Bethanie Mattek-Sands (USA)/Lucie Safarova (CZE) vs. [WC] Elizabeth Halbauer/Sofia Kenin (USA)
Fifth match, Althea Gibson Club Court
On Wednesday Safarova beat Mattek-Sands in singles on this very court, but Thursday they join forces as the best doubles team in the world. They do battle against a pair of young Americans on one of the charmed courts of the Volvo Car Open.
Shelby Rogers (USA) vs. Naomi Osaka (JPN)
Evening session – 7pm, Volvo Car Stadium
Can Shelby follow up her big win with another one on Thursday? She’s 2-0 in her career against Osaka, who is a hard-hitting young player from Japan who has been on the rise the last couple of years.
